Instructions on how to become a Discount Room Member
Video Tutorial - Profile and Watchlist
1. Become a Member
To become a Discount Room member, select ‘become a member’ in the green login box.
2. Register
a. Please register with your real full name. Your real name is needed because redeemable vouchers are personalised, and are printed with your name on them. Businesses may check that you are the person shown on the voucher upon redemption. Your username is what will be shown on the site. This can be your real name, or whatever you like. Registering with your real name also has bearing with relation to competitions etc.
b. An email is required so that we can send you all the items on special that you have specifically asked for. We do not bombard your inbox. You will only receive one alert email from us eacxh week, which will be a snapshot of what's happening in your member page.
c. Your postcode is required so that we can send you any discounts and specials from your area.
d. Click on 'Register'.
You will receive a welcome email.
Once you are logged in, you will be greeted by name. The green login box is your navigation station. From here you can easily navigate through your personalised areas, including your watchlist, as well as your finds, reviews, comments, shortlist and friends.
3. My Watchlist and Alerts
Ok, now this is where all the matching-magic happens. Once you login, you will be directed to your 'My Watchlist and Alerts' page. First time in, you simply nominate what you are interested in, and while you work sleep and play, The Discount Room will be searching for you. As soon as there’s a match, we’ll deliver it into your Member Page!
To get started with setting up your watchlist, click on “CREATE” which is on the right hand side of the screen.
a. Categories
You can filter the items you want to be alerted of by selecting the categories you are interested in. e.g. If you select ‘Fashion & Clothing’, 'Food and Beverage’ and ‘House and Garden’ only, those are the only items you will receive alerts for in the ‘My Watchlist’ section of your page. You will not receive anything you have not asked for. Just hold down the ‘ctrl’ key (or 'cmd' for Apple users) to select multiple categories, or go nuts and select the lot.
b. Keyword
You can further enhance your category choices by adding keywords. E.g. shirts, rings, brand names… Keywords are “additional” to your Category selections. This means that you can choose a whole category of one thing, but only a keyword for another and you would get both results.
c. Minimum Discount – (this is a filter)
You can filter your watchlist by a minimum discount level, i.e. you may only want to be alerted only of items that are discounted by 30% or more. (Note: a filter will filter though everything based on this criteria so it is limiting)
d. Postcodes – (this is a filter)
You can filter your watchlist to alert you of promotions that are in specific postal code locations only. (Note: a filter will filter though everything based on this criteria so it is limiting)
e. Minimum – (this is a filter)
This filters based on price levels. (Note: a filter will filter though everything based on this criteria so it is limiting)
f. Favourite Businesses
This is a cool function which automatically loops you in to everything that your favourite business does, when they do it. We would encourage everyone to support their favourite businesses by selecting them as a favourite, especially if you already know that business or are an existing customer.
4. Personal Profile
This is your own Discount Room hub. Please fill in your personal profile completely so that you can enjoy the full functionality of the site. It also makes the experience more fun for everyone. It is also important to fill in all the relevant information because this is what the computer uses to match what you are looking for with the corresponding promotions and specials.
Click on ‘Edit Profile’ on the top right hand side of the screen.
5. Edit Profile
After you select ‘Edit Profile’, scroll down the page till you see ‘Update My Profile’.
a. Photo
Upload an image of yourself. Then, whenever you share discounts on the site, your photo will be posted on the homepage and under the Member Shares.
b. Contact Details
Your phone number, address, email address and mobile number will NOT be made public, but we may need to contact you via these traditional methods.
c. Personal Description
Please tell everyone in The Discount Room about yourself . Add any information you want that highlights you, your interests, passions, loves, desires, shopping habits. We are all unique, just like snowflakes, and it's great to celebrate that.
d. Postcodes 2, 3, & 4?
In the initial registration, you provided your main residential postcode. Any ‘local promotions’ that might be happening in the area where you live will be sent to your Member Page under 'Location'. However, you may want to have a wider geographic footprint than just this postcode, so that system can match you to other areas as well – for example the areas where you work, or visit often. So by adding extra postcodes will get ‘Local Promotions’ for those areas as well. You can ultimately select up to 4 postcodes. And you can also change these whenever you want.
e. Email Alert
We will send you an email alert once a week only. This email will be the result of matching current discounts with what you are looking for and delivering you the results. This is just a reminder and a tasting of all the matches that are in your member Page.
The Discount Room delivers you 4 sets of discount sections. All of these are accumulated in your profile page, under their respective tabs.
1. “Watchlist matches” - these are discounts matches that are based on your peronal watchlist that you've set up.
2. Local Promotions – discounts based on your geography / postcodes.
3. Mega Discounts – hot offers that are over 40% off.
4. Other Vouchers – general (non-item specific) vouchers.
Again, the weekly email alert will only be a summary and will direct you back to your member page where you will be able to see all the results. In reality, the matches happen in real time. That is, as soon as the offer is listed by a business, if it's for you, you'll get it instantly.
f. Email Alert Sections
You may not want to receive some of the sections (although we can't imagine why!) so you have the option to turn them off or back on again whenever you want. Here at the Discount Room, you are in total control of what information you want to receive.
g. Personal and Professional interests
Tell us your personal and professional interests, and when you add friends from the website, you can explore/discover mutual interests.
(You can also make friends and correspond with them. Showcasing your personal and professional interests really helps in finding like minded people you can connect with. You can make a friend by going to the ‘Latest Member Finds’ on the home page and clicking on ‘View All’. Just click on the member’s name and send a friend request. For more detailed instructions please go to the Friends section on the help page).
h. Date of Birth
Again, this is not made public, it’s just for our records and you never know, you might get a little something on your birthday!
Remember to click on update to save what you have done!
6. My Reviews
If there are certain listings against which you have commented / reviewed on within the site, they will be recorded on this page. This page can be viewed by other members.
If you post lots of useful comments and reviews, you may be entrusted with the ‘Circle of Trust’ badge 
so that the members of the site know you are a reliable source.
7. My Friends
You can make friends with other members and communicate with them.
Throughout the website, if you see a member’s name which is hyperlinked, you can click on it to preview their profile and their interests. If you feel you would like to be friends, just click on the ‘Add as Friend’ link on the top right hand side of their profile page. The member will receive an email telling them you would like to be friends. Once they approve you as a friend, you can start communicating!
You can find “friends” in:
- The ‘Latest Member Finds’ section on the home page and in the ‘View All’ section
- ‘Latest Member Reviews / Comments’ on the home page
- Reviews on product pages
The ‘My Friend’s’ page lists all your friends.
To communicate with a friend, just click on their hyperlinked name.
Once your friend’s profile page shows up, leave a comment at the bottom of their page, then click on ‘Post Comment’.
Your friend will receive the comment in their own profile page. They then can send a message back in the same way.
8. My Shortlist
While browsing through offers, you can save anything of interest to your shortlist for later review. Shortlisted items can be deleted when you are done with them. This page is private.
9. Member Finds
This page lists all your Discount Finds, and can be viewed by other members. Discount sharing is an integral part of the site. As a member, you are encouraged to share all the great bargains you find. These could be from anywhere and about anything, as long as they are communicating a special offer, discount, freebie, voucher etc. Just select ‘Member Finds’ and click on ‘Create’. Then simply add the details of the bargain you have found. When finished, click on ‘Create’ at the bottom of the page.
You and your discount find will be listed immediately and featured on the homepage.
Member’s who actively share offers with The Discount Room sharing community will be recognized with a “Discount Scout” badge. 
10. My Comments Log
This keeps a log of all the comments you have made to your friends on the website. This page is private.
